In March of 1965 Chester Paff, Sr. (Grandpa) and Bill Bell got together for a joint business venture. They purchased Marstan Cleaners which was located on Route 33 in Neptune in the Oliver Brothers Real Estate strip center. Their idea was to franchise other drycleaning plants in the area. They opened one plant in Eatontown called Kleenerette and another plant in Brick. One year later they split up. Mr. Bell kept the Brick store and my Dad, Chester Paff, Jr, purchased his interest in the Eatontown and Neptune drycleaning plants.
My Dad majored in Business at Monmouth College and after graduation took a job with the Insurance Company of North America, but always dreamed of owning his own business. When he purchased the interest in the Eatontown and Neptune stores, he was starting to fulfill his dream. For the next year he worked for INA and after work, learned the drycleaning business by working at the Neptune store. He also took a 6 month night course for professional spotters and drycleaners at the New York School of Drycleaning.
One year later he felt that Marstan Cleaners needed full time management. In September of 1967, he decided to separate his business interests with his father. Paff, Sr. took the Eatontown store and Dad kept the Neptune location. In 1967 Dad left his job with INA so he could devote all his time to increasing the business at Marstan Cleaners.
In 1970, the State Highway Dept. widened Route 33 and erected a divider and jug-handles which made access to his store difficult for customers. In 1974 an established drycleaning plant in Shark River Plaza, 1500 yards East of our location was put up for sale. He bought that existing plant and moved Marstan Cleaners to its new location. Business was successful and in April, 1976 Marstan Cleaners expanded by opening another location in Wall Township. The Sea Girt Mall store was operated as a “Drop Store”, with all the work processed at the Neptune plant.
In 1995, after completing college at Rochester Institute of Technology, I started to work at Marstan Cleaners learning every part of the business. In 1996 I completed a professional drycleaner’s course at the National Institute of Drycleaning in Silver Springs, Maryland.
The two large anchor stores in Shark River Plaza closed up and in 2001 Dad decided to outfit the Sea Girt store with drycleaning and pressing equipment. We began to operate Marstan Cleaners at one location by June 2002. At that time Dad closed the Neptune store after 27 years at that location. On December 31, 2002, Dad retired from the business, and I took over the operation of Marstan Cleaners. Dad still continues as a valuable consultant.
